Make sure your HERO5 Black camera is powered off. Then, press and slide the Latch Release button to open the side door. To charge your HERO5 Black, insert the included USB-C cable into your camera and into a computer USB port or a USB wall charger that outputs 5V 2A (ideal), or 5V 1A (minimum).

The LED status lights will turn on while your HERO5 Black is charging. Once charging is complete, the lights turn off.  It typically takes about two hours to fully charge your HERO5 Black camera with a 5V 1A wall charger. Times vary with other charging methods.

When the camera is off and QuikCapture is enabled, you can turn the camera on and immediately begin capturing video or time lapse photos just by pressing the Shutter/Select button.* A short press starts to record video. Press and hold to capture time lapse photos. Press again to stop recording and power off the camera. QuikCapture also helps conserve battery power because the camera is on only when you’re recording.

*QuikCapture is on by default.

Control your HERO5 Black with your voice. Twelve simple voice commands let you start recording video, capture a single photo, begin a time lapse and more by speaking to your HERO5 Black. Voice Control is available in seven languages.

Voice Control is off by default. To turn on Voice Control, swipe down and tap the Voice Control icon in the upper right. You can also swipe down, tap Preferences and scroll to the Voice Control section. You can see the full list of commands there.

To choose between the three different video modes on your HERO5 Black, turn on the camera with the Mode button and tap the Capture mode icon on the lower left of the screen. You can now select the Video, Photo or Time Lapse icon. Select the Video icon to choose between three different video capture modes.

To get to Photo mode, power on the camera with the Mode button. Tap the Capture mode icon on the lower left of the screen. Select the Photo icon and choose your Capture mode from Single, Night and Burst photos.

To get to Time Lapse mode, turn on the camera with the Mode button and tap the Capture mode icon on the lower left of the screen. Select Time Lapse to capture a series of shots over time. For example, the Time Lapse Video capture mode on HERO5 Black can capture the sun setting over the course of two hours, automatically creating a video clip from the shots captured.

Time Lapse Mode is a great way to capture and condense a longer period of time. Afterwards, you can select individual photos from a time lapse sequence using Quik for desktop.

Quik™ for desktop, a free GoPro app available for Mac® and Windows®, makes it easy to import photos and videos from your camera or microSD™ card. You can also use Quik to transform your footage into awesome videos synced to music, share with friends, update your camera and more.

Importing to your computer using Quik:

1. Connect your camera to your computer using the included cable, or insert your microSD card using a microSD card reader/adapter (sold separately).
2. Quik automatically imports your photos and videos at full source quality.
3. If you’re a GoPro Plus subscriber, Quik automatically uploads your photos and videos to the cloud.¹

On your phone or tablet:

You can easily download your GoPro photos and videos to your phone or tablet using Quik Key (sold separately) or the Capture app, available free for iOS® and Android™.

Edit your photos and videos anywhere with the GoPro mobile apps, Quik™ and Capture. Quik makes it easy to create awesome videos synced to music with just a few taps. Capture lets you download your photos and videos to your phone, trim videos, grab photos from videos and more. Both apps are available free for iOS and Android.¹

Editing with Quik:

Use Capture or Quik Key to download photos and videos to your phone:

1. Open Quik on your phone.
2. Select the photos and video clips you want to include in your edit.
3. Pick an editing style and a song. Quik automatically creates a video with transitions and effects synced to the beat of the music.
4. Customize your story with text, filters and more, then easily share it with friends.

Editing with Capture:

1. Connect your GoPro to Capture. For help connecting, see the Capture App section in the Getting Started module of this tutorial.
2. Tap the Media icon.
3. Select a video, then tap the Scissors icon or the Grab a Photo icon.
4. When finished, you can share to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and more.

Quik™ for desktop, a free GoPro app available for Mac and Windows, makes it easy to import your photos and videos, and create awesome edits with simple storytelling tools and a library of soundtracks.

Download Quik for desktop

Creating a video edit:

1. Select Create. Your recent video clips will appear in the gallery.
2. Scroll through your clips to find and HiLight your favorite moments, then click to add them to your video.
3. Set the duration of your video and select Music to choose a song. Quik automatically syncs your video to the beat of the music.
4. You can customize your video by adding or removing HiLights, changing the song or adjusting the duration.
5. When your video is perfect, easily share it to Facebook or YouTube™ to stoke out your friends.

Trimming a video or grabbing a photo:

1. Select View, then double-click the video you want to edit.
2. Click the Scissors icon or Grab a Photo icon.
3. From here, you can trim your video or grab a photo.
4. Once the new clip or photo is saved, you can easily share it to Facebook or YouTube.

Protune™
With Protune enabled, you can capture higher quality photos, videos, and audio to use in your video editing. Protune's high data rate captures images with less compression, giving content creators higher quality for more professional productions. You can change and fine tune settings such as Color, ISO, Sharpness, White Balance and more.

RAW photo
HERO5 Black can output RAW photo files for use in advanced photo editing applications. The industry-standard GRP file undergoes less processing and compression than standard JPG files for faster storage and smaller files without impacting quality. This gives you greater control in post-processing and photo editing. (Requires Adobe® Lightroom® 6.7 or later and the Camera Raw plugin of 9.7 or later.)

RAW audio
Musicians and audiophiles alike can now output a separate WAV audio file from HERO5 Black along with the video file with RAW audio enabled. Capture a dedicated audio track and choose between three levels of audio processing of the WAV file—perfect for anyone who wants a higher degree of control, fidelity and flexibility when using their own post-processing audio tools.

WDR
Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) allows for improved image quality in situations that would typically yield over- or under-exposed areas in a photo. With WDR enabled, HERO5 Black adjusts exposure across an entire scene, producing increased level of detail in dark shadows and bright highlights alike.

Exposure Control
The Exposure Control feature lets you set the exposure based on a select region of the scene. You can either set the exposure to automatic or lock it based on that region.

For best results, plan your video or photo shoot. Capturing videos and photos at different angles and changing the field of view will help tell your story more effectively and keep it fun and entertaining.

While capturing photos and videos, keep lighting and audio in mind. Be sure that your subject is well lit so that when it comes time to edit, your videos are bright and easy to see.

You can always play back your first few videos on your HERO5 Black to ensure that your subjects are framed correctly, well-lit and easy to hear. 

After you have imported all your content, a good practice to follow is formatting your microSD card. Formatting clears your card and keeps it in good working order.

Love the rugged waterproof design of the new HERO5 Black? Whenever you’ve used your GoPro in salt water, follow these steps to ensure that it stays in great working condition:

• Completely rinse the camera with fresh water to ensure no sand or debris is left on the camera.
• Dry the entire camera.
• Inspect all seals on the camera to ensure that they are dry and free from debris especially near the doors. If there is any debris and you are unable to open the door, try rinsing with fresh water again and tapping the camera to dislodge first. Be sure to dry the entire camera before opening any doors as it is not waterproof if the doors are open.
