Supported Resolutions for Copy and Share in the GoPro App

Question

What resolutions are supported in the GoPro App?

Where does it apply?

  • GoPro App
  • iOS Devices
  • Android Devices

Answer

Answer
Not all resolutions captured by GoPro cameras are supported by the GoPro app. Compatibility varies by device, camera model, and operating system version. Depending on your device’s processing power, some higher resolution files may have poor playback or editing performance, and compatibility is not guaranteed on all devices.

Android Devices
Because of the vast amount of Android devices supported by the GoPro app, there are no universal standards of resolution support for the platform. However, the majority of modern Android devices are capable of playing back most videos captured by your GoPro, even 4K. That said, every Android phone is different, so you may see some stuttering or choppy playback on higher resolutions and frame rates, like 4K 4:3, or in HEVC modes.

iOS Devices
Beginning in GoPro 5.2, files downloaded to the GoPro app from your camera are stored at their source quality. However, due to file size and device limitations, Apple’s Photos application requires some high-resolution files to be converted to a lower resolution in order to be saved to the device. The requirement to convert these videos depends on your device’s processing capabilities. To accommodate this process, be sure that your device has double the required space available for the content you want to transfer. For example, if your video is 2GB, make sure you have at least 4GB of space available on your device.

Live Preview: The GoPro app may not support live preview for HERO2 and HERO3 cameras. However, you should be able to save the content depending on what your device can support. Learn more. HEVC Video require iOS 11.2 or later.
