A Story of Support

Their story is one of incredible spirit. Jia Wenqi lost both arms when he was only three years old, and Jia Haixia was born blind in one eye. Haixia’s world was turned upside down when an industrial accident took the sight in his other eye in 2000. Haixia was 39 years old, completely blind, and was no longer able to support his wife and their 4-year-old son. That all changed when his lifelong friend Wenqi convinced him that together, they could do anything. “You’ll be my arms, and I’ll be your eyes,” Wenqi told him.

For years, pollution from the quarry where Haixia worked ravaged the countryside, turning it into a wasteland devoid of wildlife. Contaminated air and water threatened their village. But Wenqi and Haixia knew that they could make a difference. With no money or outside help, they planted more than 10,000 trees to help turn the tide of destruction.

Their story has gone viral in China and is now inspiring the world. The local government has stepped up to help Wenqi and Haixia support their families, but they rely on each other to continue their mission. With no money to buy saplings, Haixia climbs onto Wenqi’s shoulders to take clippings from trees they planted years ago. Their work has paid off—birds have begun to nest in the new forest. The “brothers” are now more determined than ever. Haixia has vowed to “continue my work until my last breath.”
