How do I participate in the HERO9 Black Million Dollar Challenge?

Submit your raddest raw video clips—shot exclusively on HERO9 Black—to the Million Dollar Challenge at gopro.com/MillionDollarChallenge. Our creative team will include the shots we love the most in the HERO9 Black Highlight Video. If your clip is featured in the video, you’ll get your share of $1,000,000.

What is the HERO9 Black Highlight Video?

Every year GoPro produces an insane highlight video to celebrate the newest cameras in the GoPro lineup. For the third year in a row, we’re hosting the Million Dollar Challenge so we can feature you getting after it with your new HERO9 Black.

What does 100% shot on GoPro mean?

Any photo, raw clip, or video edit you captured with GoPro can be considered for GoPro Awards. For photos, submit the native raw unedited .jpg file shot on your GoPro. The file size needs to be greater than 1MB.

For video clips, upload the native raw .mp4 file shot on your GoPro.
Awards submissions must be shot in HD (720p, 1080p, 1440p, 2.7K, 4K).
The higher the resolution, the better.

When does the HERO9 Black Million Dollar Challenge end?

Get your submissions in by 11:59 p.m. PST on December 4th, 2020.

Is my stuff good enough to submit?

What it means to live a full life is different for everyone. Whether you’re out in the park, up in the mountains, underneath the water or simply catching the unexpected—we want to see your creativity shine. When in doubt, send it in.

When will Award Recipients be notified that they’ll receive their share of the $1,000,000?

Award Recipients whose video clips are included in the HERO9 Blackcomb Million Dollar Challenge Highlight Video will be notified when the video premieres on or around December 15, 2020 at 12PM PST.

What’s up with the Million Dollar Challenge?

The GoPro Million Dollar Challenge is an annual video challenge where people submit their best, funniest and most creative unedited clips for a shot at their share of a million dollars. Visit the homepage to learn more.

How many video clips will be included in the HERO9 Black Highlight Video?

That all depends on what we get. Editors’ choice.

Where do I submit my photos and videos to GoPro Awards?
What if I don’t have HERO9 Black?

Only HERO9 clips will be eligible for the HERO9 Black Million Dollar Challenge. There are a ton of other challenges within the GoPro Awards Program where we accept photos and videos from all GoPro cameras.

Can I submit edited videos to the HERO9 Black Million Dollar Challenge?

No, submit raw video clips only with no music.

Is there any legal stuff I should know about?

Yep, there is. Here’s the Content Submission Agreement.

What kind of video clips should I submit to the HERO9 Black Million Dollar Challenge?

Send us sweet clips that show off what you and the new HERO9 Black can do. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for inspiration.

What kind of photos, clips and videos can I submit?

Any photo, raw clip, or video edit you captured with a GoPro is great to submit to our Anything Awesome challenge. Guidelines vary for other challenges, so take a look at our Challenges Overview.

  • 100% GOPRO PHOTOS

For GoPro Awards, submit the native raw unedited .jpg file shot on your GoPro. The file size needs to be greater than 1MB.

  • 100% GOPRO RAW CLIPS

Submit the native raw .mp4 file shot on your GoPro. Submissions must be shot in HD or higher resolution (720p, 1080p, 1440p, 2.7K, 4K). The higher the resolution, the better.

  • 100% GOPRO VIDEO EDITS

The best video edits invite viewers to connect with the story by connecting with one central character, or at most, a small group. Establish the story’s location early on. Then build moments of tension and action toward an apex. Add a fun, humorous, breathtaking (or curveball) conclusion.

Check out the GoPro Channel to get a good feel for GoPro’s storytelling style. Every single clip within a video edit submission needs to be 100% shot on GoPro.

What happens if two different people submit the same video clip?

Only the first person to submit is eligible for the HERO9 Black Million Dollar Challenge.

Do I need to think about rights and clearances?
  • People

Yes! Thanks for asking. We want to respect our friends, neighbors and fellow artists, so you’ll need to obtain additional documentation for any recognizable people seen in your photos or videos. GoPro cannot use anyone’s image without their permission.

  • Music

Yes! All music must be licensed. Choose a free track from our partners at Epidemic Sound. Video edits submitted with unlicensed music cannot be selected for GoPro Awards. If you don’t want to add music, simply submit your raw GoPro clips.

How can I make sure my work stands out?

Both image quality and story quality help your photo or video submission stand out. Always submit the highest-quality resolution. Photos should be a minimum of 1MB. Raw clips and video edits should be captured and submitted in the highest quality possible and without the addition of watermarks.

Lastly, the more info we have, the better. Complete the form fields when you submit your photos and videos to the best of your ability. “Tokyo” is good, but “Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo, Japan” is better.

Looking for some inspiration? Check out the official GoPro Instagram and YouTube channels to see how we like to describe the shot.

What happens if my video clip is included in the HERO9 Black Highlight Video?

If your video clip is featured, you’ll receive your equal cut of $1,000,000.

When I submit, what awards am I eligible for?

Think about GoPro Awards as a gateway to all of GoPro. The awesome photos, clips and video edits you submit to GoPro Awards will be considered for each of GoPro’s social channels (and through them, access to an audience of millions). Awards submissions may also be selected as the GoPro Photo or Video of the Day and may be considered for cash awards, discount codes at gopro.com and more.

How will the $1,000,000 be divided?

Everyone whose footage is included in the HERO9 Black Highlight Video will earn one equal share of $1,000,000.

What if GoPro includes two or more of my video clips in the HERO9 Black Highlight Video?

Each person is only eligible for a single share of the $1,000,000. We can include multiple clips submitted by one person, but that person is still only eligible to earn one equal share. You also get bragging rights!

How many times can I submit?

GoPro Awards is always on, and there’s no limit to how many times you can submit.

Upload your best, brightest and most captivating content, but keep in mind—multiple submissions of the same asset will not increase the likelihood that you’ll be selected for an award.

What are the terms and conditions?

Additional Terms for the HERO9 Black Million Dollar Challenge can be found here

How will I be notified about my submissions?

GoPro will use the email associated with your GoPro account for all communications. Make sure your contact info is current to ensure proper delivery of GoPro notifications.

How will I know if my submission was received?

A visual confirmation will appear on the upload page once your submission is complete.
Also, a confirmation email will be sent for the first submission each day. (Multiple uploads won’t result in multiple emails.) All notifications will be sent to the email address associated with your GoPro account.

One important note: The ability to upload photos and videos to your GoPro PLUS account is separate from GoPro Awards submissions. Although you may not see the content in your media manager, you’re still able to submit. Your Awards content will be identified by the title you enter at the time of submission. Make your description clear and unique, so you’ll know what’s been selected for an award when notified.

What kind of GoPro content can I submit?

Raw unedited video clips from HERO9 Black will be considered for the HERO9 Black Million Dollar Challenge.

What about photos?

Photos will not be considered for the HERO9 Black Million Dollar Challenge.

Can I receive multiple GoPro Awards?

Absolutely. There’s no limit to the number of awards you can receive or the number of submissions you can enter. We’re continually searching for our favorite submissions, so keep them coming!

GoPro has 44M followers on social media. How can I tap into that exposure?

Each time you upload footage to GoPro Awards, there’s a possibility your personal social handle will be promoted to more than 44 million followers around the globe. Most of our featured photographers and videographers begin engaging with the brand right here. We also regularly select award recipients to represent GoPro at global events. Then there are the fringe benefits. You’ll be out there living your best life and inspiring others to live theirs. The opportunities are truly endless, and you’re in charge.

I just got a GoPro. Where do I start?

That’s awesome! Welcome to the crew. Once you unbox your camera, begin with the Quick Start Guide. Try capturing at least one photo and one video on the very first day. Then start exploring awe-inducing GoPro features like TimeWarp 3.0, SuperPhoto and LiveBurst.

When does the GoPro Awards program end?

It doesn’t. GoPro Awards is a year-round program and the Anything Awesome challenge is always open. Expiration of our featured challenges will vary per challenge, and we’ll list end dates on GoPro Awards and individual challenge pages.

Is there anything I shouldn’t submit to Awards?

Great question. We actually asked our legal team the same thing. Here are several examples of photos and videos you should most definitely not submit.

  1. Anything fraudulent, false, misleading or deceptive.
  2. Anything defamatory, obscene, pornographic, vulgar or offensive.
  3. Anything that promotes illegal or harmful activities or substances.
  4. Anything that promotes discrimination, bigotry, racism, hatred, harassment or harm against any individual or group.
  5. Anything that infringes upon, misappropriates or violates a third party’s patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret, moral rights or other intellectual property rights, rights of publicity or privacy.
  6. Anything that violates or encourages conduct that might violate any applicable law or regulation or give rise to civil liability.
  7. Anything violent or threatening, or anything that promotes violence or actions that might be threatening to another person.
Can GoPro use my content, even if I don’t earn an award?

Yes. That’s the short answer. Simply by submitting your content and agreeing to our standard terms, you’ve given GoPro a non-exclusive license to use your content. Non-exclusive means you’re still able to share your content on your own social channels and YouTube, and you’re sharing the rights with GoPro for the opportunity to get paid and receive even greater exposure through GoPro’s global reach.

What’s the GoPro Premium Content Licensing Program all about?

The biggest difference between this and GoPro Awards has to do with licensing rights. By checking the box for the GoPro Premium Content Licensing Program, you’re electing to give GoPro exclusive rights to the photo or video you’re submitting. Global advertising brands, ad agencies and television networks look to GoPro Content Licensing for high-end imagery and incredible stories. This puts your content in front of key decision makers and opens the door to getting featured in TV shows and commercials around the world.

What are some of the ways GoPro might use my submission?

There are a number of ways GoPro might decide to celebrate your content, including but not limited to channels like YouTube. Additional uses may include GoPro promotional materials and official GoPro social channels such as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Content licensing opportunities are also available.

If I receive a cash reward, who pays the taxes?

All payments distributed by GoPro are exclusive of taxes, duties, levies, tariffs and other governmental charges. Award recipients will be responsible for paying any applicable taxes, interest and penalties due. International awards recipients may be subject to withholding taxes, which will be deducted from their payments.

If my submission is selected, how will I get paid?

If you’re selected for a cash reward, you’ll be notified by email with directions on how to receive your compensation. GoPro will make six attempts over a 90-day period to request your payment details in order to fulfill payment for your award.

I received a coupon code, but it didn’t work on gopro.com.

If you’re having difficulty using your coupon code, please reach out to GoPro Customer Support at gopro.com/help. Unfortunately, GoPro doesn’t currently ship to the locations listed here. Coupon codes are therefore also not applicable for these locations.
