First Pro Surfer to Use a GoPro During Major Surf Competition – Sunny Garcia

GoPro started as an idea born on a surf trip. It has grown to become the world’s most versatile camera and used by more consumers and professional productions than any other camera in its class.  And the HD HERO2 has now taken a momentous leap by doing something that’s never been done before – when GoPro athlete and professional surfer, Sunny Garcia mounted the new HD HERO2 to the nose of his surfboard during his heat in the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, HI. This is the first time a surfer has used a GoPro camera during a major competition.

“The guys at GoPro have been helping me out for the last year or two so I was trying to help get them footage,” said Garcia. “They asked me if I would use it during the heat because it’s a new camera and we wanted to see what we could get.” – Sunny Garcia, courtesy of Surfing Magazine

Testimonials

Mark Burnett, five-time Emmy award winner and avid GoPro customer, said in a previous statement, "We have used GoPro cameras in some of our biggest productions, like Survivor and The Bible. GoPro has allowed us to capture and share fascinating new perspectives that previously weren’t possible or were too costly, which in the end makes for better story telling. We are always excited to see what GoPro is working on next."

"In a world of smartphones and increasingly small cameras, GoPro is still the film fans device of choice and the rugged gadget that will launch the careers of many future directors. If in doubt, check out the home made rocket that took a GoPro to space or the shark footage, both on YouTube." - T3 Award for the GoPro HERO3
