World’s Fastest Growing Camera Company Brings Title Sponsorship to Race Track that Inspired Its Founder
San Mateo, CA (August 23, 2012) – GoPro, maker of the world’s most versatile cameras and producer of some of today’s most engaging online programming, is proud to announce a multi-year sponsorship of the GoPro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, one of the most exciting and challenging road course races on the IndyCar circuit. The debut GoPro Grand Prix is scheduled for this Sunday, August 26.
GoPro’s sponsorship of the race is fitting as some of the company’s biggest breakthrough moments have occurred at the very track that plays host to the race, Sonoma Raceway. It was here that GoPro’s founder and CEO Nick Woodman was fulfilling his lifelong dream of learning to drive a race car when he realized that the wrist camera he’d invented for surfing could also be strapped to the roll bar of a race car to record his racing. The resulting video was so immersive and engaging that for the first time Woodman was able to share his experience with friends and family that couldn’t otherwise experience the thrills of racing. Woodman and all of GoPro will be rooting for GoPro sponsored IndyCar driver, J.R. Hildebrand on Sunday. Hildebrand was a young racing driver and race school instructor at Sonoma Raceway in 2006 when Woodman was learning to race. Hildebrand is now racing in his second season on the IndyCar circuit.
GoPro will be giving IndyCar fans access to exclusive behind the scenes videos, an in-car racecourse preview, and highlights of GoPro sponsored driver, J.R. Hildebrand. Fans will be able to watch videos on the auto channel of the GoPro Network as well as follow the online conversation with #GoProGP via Twitter.
